Nicobar Pigeons

The Nicobar Pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica) is an impressive tropical pigeon known for its long, flowing neck feathers and metallic plumage that may shimmer in shades of green, purple, blue, and copper. It is one of the closest living relatives of the extinct dodo and is highly valued by experienced aviculturists and ornamental-bird enthusiasts.

Diet

Nicobar Pigeons have a varied diet consisting mainly of seeds, grains, fruits, berries, nuts, buds, and other plant material. They may also eat small invertebrates such as insects and other forest-floor organisms. Their strong bill helps them break open hard foods, including nuts and seeds.

For captive care, provide a balanced pigeon or softbill diet recommended by an avian veterinarian. Fresh fruits, suitable seeds, clean drinking water, and appropriate mineral supplementation may also be offered. Avoid sudden dietary changes and do not feed foods that may be toxic to birds.

Behaviour

Nicobar Pigeons are generally calm but active birds that spend considerable time walking and foraging on the ground. They may be kept individually, in compatible pairs, or in small groups when adequate space and supervision are provided.

During courtship, the male may bow, coo, puff out his feathers, and display his brightly coloured plumage. Nicobar Pigeons can be strong flyers, although they often forage on the forest floor. They may become stressed by excessive handling, loud surroundings, overcrowding, or unsuitable temperatures.
